Garden Rescue 2016 Series 1

Garden Rescue 2016 Series 1

Garden Rescue first appeared to our screens for the first ever episode on 01 July 2016 on BBC1.

Charlie Dimmock had previously appeared in several Gardening programmes but was best known for Ground Force and this was a return to TV after a break.

The Rich Brothers Harry & David Rich who were new to TV Gardening Programmes but were already Chelsea Award Winning Garden Designers

Charlie Dimmock return to TV Gardening caused quite a stir when Garden Rescue first was shown after her appearing on Ground force for 12 Series which ended in 2005 caused the press honed in on her change of appearance.

Charlie bounced back with her flowing locks, infectious laugh, water features and her obvious love of gardening to have another successful Garden Series.

Garden Rescue Team

The dungaree wearing Rich Brother, David and Harry won their first Chelsea Flower Show Gold in 2013 and brought their enthusiasm for design to the programme giving us plenty of ideas.

They proved to be a popular choice with viewers and their designs were a real contrast to Charlie's giving an insight into how the same space could look for different styles.

The Programme format was that the designers meet the couple and then design a garden to their needs and budget and then a winning design will be chosen by the homeowners.

The losing Designer helps the winner build the garden along with a team of friendly Landscapers.

We have a recap, grand reveal, shocked homeowners and everyone always happy with the results.

The series started with a showstopper in Blackburn for a couple that wanted a Japanese Garden.

Garden plan

The Rich Brothers won the first Design battle and their design for the £7,000 garden included some huge boulders that all had to be manhandled into position.

There was also a huge pond and a Japanese inspired teahouse over the pond and the transformation was an amazing start to the show and is still a memorable garden.

There are several memorable gardens in this series or maybe it was repeated a lot so we have seen them several times.

There are also parts of some of the gardens that are just as memorable like the grass seat in episode 4 from Worcester.

Charlie and Harry on turf seat

Andy and Angela wanted a garden in memory of their 26 year old son who sadly died and a turf and wicker natural seat was made amongst the wild flowers.

A Teletubby inspired mound and tunnel in Episode 2 in Walsall formed part of a children's play area in the garden used by 3 generations of the family.

Finished Garden

The Concrete jungle was transformed with a water feature, Pizza oven and a Tinky Winky paradise.

Episode 15 in Stevenage a garden makeover for Jenna and Craig, parents of new born twins who had a difficult sloping garden, full of Man hole covers, in their garden.

What made this memorable for me was there boisterous dog rampaging all over the newly planted slopes and the salad and herb planter coffee table they made them.

In the most recent series of Garden Rescue 2024 Series 9 Charlie revisits a garden from Series 1 in Pontefract from Episode 8.

In this new addition to Garden Rescue we get to see how the garden had grown and developed since the makeover and re meet with the home owners.

Kerry, Chris and their children wanted a slice of the good life for £2,000, somewhere to grow their own and for the wildlife in their 50 foot garden!

Rich brothers and Kerry and Chris

I don't think the team had got into only doing the makeovers in the nicer weather in series 1 as the team arrived to visit the garden and show their designs in the snow.

The Rich Brothers won with the lure of bright orange concrete planters staggered up the long garden.

Finished garden

The family loved the bold colour choice and although they only had a small budget after completing their house extension the planters did the trick of breaking up the long garden.

when Charlie returned 8 years later she was surprised to still see the orange paint scheme and the garden was filled out and looking beautiful and the couple had expanded the seating area.

Garden revisited

Garden Rescue has only grown in popularity over the 9 series with an ever cheerful Charlie at the helm, it is easy watching, light entertainment with some gardening thrown in and some good designs from the team.

The team may have changed but the trusty format has remained with the gardens being loved and admired although the naughty side of me would love to see someone hate their garden!!

Lets hope Garden Rescue continues for even more series to come, making garden dreams come true!
