Love Your Garden Series 5

Love Your Garden Series 5

Alan Titchmarsh introduces us to the 5th series of Love Your Garden which was first aired on 23 June 2015.

Alan is again joined by his trusty team of David DomoneyKatie Rushworth  and Frances Tophill.

Series 5  ran for 9 episodes, with the team completing more life changing garden makeovers for deserving recipients.

The programme ran with the usual formula of Alan surprising someone with the promise of a dream garden, the team start work, we hear the story behind the garden and then we have the grand reveal and the shocked reaction.

Love your garden team

This series, after looking into all the episodes, I struggled to find the memorable gardens!

Usually there are more than enough stand out gardens, sometimes all of them but this series I could remember only a few.

What did stand out though was the recipients and their stories, which proved more memorable than the gardens, which for me, seemed to lack any WOW factor in this series.

There was the odd part of the garden that was memorable for me but the gardens themselves in this series were disappointing.

Golden Girls, Roberta and Enid had been friends for 71 years and Roberta was now nearly completely blind and Enid had fought Breast Cancer.

Roberta, Enid David and Alan

These ladies needed a low maintenance garden in Episode 7and the memorable part for me was the revolving Summer House that could be moved to always face the sun!

Nobody mentioned just how 2 elderly ladies, one with visual problems would be able to spin round a heavy shed, maybe it is easier than it looks, but still it gives a cozy nook for afternoon tea out of any drafts.

Alan, Chris and Lizzie

Chris Finney, a War Hero who served in Iraq and his vehicle was attacked in a friendly fire incident by US planes.

He then went back into the vehicle to save a colleague, before being shot by a 2nd attack.

He was awarded the George Cross as the youngest ever recipient at 18 years old. Now married to Liz and they have 3 children and is now running a Garden Centre.

Finished garden

Chris garden was a mess! and the the team in Episode 3 make it over to give him and the family a contemporary garden of their dreams.

Alan and Maggie

Episode 6 a garden to relax in for Maggie Simkiss after 47 years in Nursing the retired  Macmillan Nurse deserved a garden makeover.

Maggie has raised Thousands of pounds for charity with her coffee mornings,

The small back yard was given a Mediterranean makeover with a Terracotta tiled patio, Cretan pots and what makes this garden memorable is the shed!

shed

The shed had the usual space for garden tools but also a secret door through to a hidden playhouse for the grandchildren.

In this series for the final garden they completed a makeover for the patients, staff and volunteers at Keech Hospice in Luton and created a wildlife garden for them all to enjoy.

The garden was to be used by all ages from children to the elderly, with the aim to attract as much wildlife as possible.

Keech Hospice

Designed around a pond with seating the garden took you on a journey around with plenty of seating areas to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

What made this episode very special was the people they met there like George Thomas who sadly died shortly after the filming.

This was by far the best garden of the series but it was big budget, big team and of course very special and I am not including this in my summary of the series.

All the people and stories told were all deserving of a garden makeover but for me this was not a memorable series of Love Your Garden, some good ideas but for me there was no spectacular stand out gardens!
