Garden Rescue 2017 Series 2

Garden Rescue Series 2

Garden Rescue returned to our screens for the second series on 24 April 2017 on BBC1.

Charlie Dimmock returns alongside The Rich Brothers Harry & David Rich who have been in it since it started in 2016.

The second series of Garden Rescue ran for just 25 Episodes.

This Series Lucinda Lawrence joined the programme as Narrator and took over from Liz White who was the narrator for Series 1.

The series followed the same format as series 1 with the Garden Designers competing to win the winning design, with Charlie's, traditional design and The Brothers, Contemporary one.

The Rich brothers

The budget is set and the work begins, followed by a small bit of gardening advice, some design ideas and then the garden is completed.

Big reveal then follows and everyone is happy with how the garden looks.

Nice bit of afternoon telly, cup of tea, a few 'oh I would like one of those' 'remember Charlie when she was in Ground Force' and a bit of light entertainment, indoor gardening with no gardening involved.

This series featured for me the most memorable garden ever from any Garden Rescue Series!

Alan and Vanessa

Alan and Vanessa in Faversham in Episode 1 wanted a Mediterranean garden in their featureless back garden ant the Rich Brothers Harry and David won the battle of the designs.

The brothers designed a contemporary take on the traditional and included seating areas, traditional box edge planting areas and a large amount of olive trees.

The couple had a healthy budget for the time of £6,000 for an Italian style garden and got a garden that would be worth more than treble that if labour and machinery etc were included in the price.

Plans

I would not even estimate the cost of the design alone from The Rich Brothers but for me they made full use of the programme to get a dream garden that will only improve over time,

This proved to be the case when Charlie revisited the garden in series 9 and it was more stunning than before.

Finished garden

The  finished garden was just wow, seating areas for outdoor dining, and peaceful spots for a glass of wine in the evening.

A water feature surrounded by planting then the avenue of Olive Trees, the Box and Lavender and a central feature to draw the eye.

finished garden

This was beyond a small garden makeover, often the gardens feel temporary fixes but this one has real longevity and the olives will only get more stunning with age!

Carol, Paul

In Episode 22 and we met Carol, Paul and Ethan from East Preston, West Sussex who wanted a wildlife garden but this turned out to be a bit of a controversial choice of design for a young family.

Plan

Charlie won this design which featured a very large wildlife pond with pond dipping platform, surrounded by natural hurdle style fencing for safety.

A wooden board walk to a bench seating area with a bug hotel and lots of wildlife attracting planting.

Finished garden

The family had already built a huge log cabin with large deck in the garden and this was in addition to that to make an wildlife and educational area to what I believe was just a section of their garden.

I am not sure I would see the fencing as being secure and childproof without the addition of some wire fencing and the stile would give access even if a gate was locked but I am sure supervised play when any child was young would be enough.

Wildlife garden

All part of the educational purpose of the garden too and the wildlife it will attract will be beneficial to everyone!

There were lots of memorable gardens in this series, or maybe it was because it was repeated a lot at the time!

How can we forget the moveable lettuce grower in Episode 21 for Naomi and Chris from Burton on Trent who has a sloping garden and what a garden suitable for all ages in the family!

Lettuce grower

I think it was to make lettuce growing chicken proof in Charlie design but is a quirky solution when surely a cloche would have been easier!

Episode 14 and Gareth Garden in Oxton Birkenhead and the Rich Brothers designed a lovely seating area but what was memorable was the garden fence paint!

painted fence

No boring brown fences for this garden, Mondrian all the way! But not in my garden thanks I stick to the trendy grey!

I do prefer these earlier series when there were less episodes, now with 35 episodes they show half a series at a time whilst filming the rest, I assume to make the best of the good gardening weather (If we have some).

From odd shaped gardens, to gardens across the road, to back yards this series had so many good gardens and designs it makes you wonder if more recent Series have lost there way and become a bit mundane in their designs?
